Opera Mobile 10.1 for Android hits public beta

Opera Mobile 10.1 for Android hits public beta

As promised, the boys and girls at Opera have pushed out an Android-flavored beta version of their Opera Mobile 10.1 product today -- and considering the company's track record for making awesome replacement browsers, odds are good that you're going to want to check it out. Besides pinch-to-zoom and support for location services, you'll find fan favorites like desktop browser sync and Opera's Speed Dial, a touchable grid of bookmarks. What's more, the visual tab management is downright slick (then again, outdoing the tab management in-built to Android doesn't take much), so you might want to take it for a test drive today -- can we suggest engadget.com as a fine starting point? The app's available from the Android Market right now; follow the break for the press release and an official demo of pinch-to-zoom in action. Or, you know, just download it and do some pinch-to-zooming of your own. Your call

Epic Games, Id Software show off jaw-dropping new iPhone games

Epic Games developed new iPhone games

We've already seen Epic Games and Id Software show off their respective game engines for iOS devices, but they're only now finally giving folks a look at the first actual games that will use them. The first of those to roll out will apparently be Id's Mutant Bash TV, which looks as impressive as the Rage demo promised (although that's aided in part by being on rails), and will cost just $0.99 for the standard version or $1.99 for the Retina Display-enhanced version. Seemingly even more impressive than it, however, is Epic Games' Infinity Blade, the game counterpart to the Unreal Engine 3-based "Epic Citadel" demo that was released back in September. While it may look like yet another God of War clone, it sounds like Epic has something quite a bit different in mind -- the game's creative director (of Shadow Complex fame, incidentally) recently described it as a mix of Karateka, Dragon's Lair and Punch-Out. Head on past the break to check out the trailer, and hit up the link below for Touch Arcade's preview of Mutant Bash TV (no video for it just yet, unfortunately).

iOS 4.2 golden master now available to developers

iOS 4.2 golden master now available to developers

iOS 4.2, the release of Apple's mobile operating system that will finally get the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad back on the same version of the OS, is now available to developers. The big news in iOS 4.2 is multitasking on the iPad, but 4.2 will be available for all iOS devices. Other new features include wireless printing via AirPrint, media streaming to Airport Express devices and AppleTVs, and changing fonts in the Notes app. Of course, you'll need to be in the iPhone Developer Program, or know someone who is, to get access.

Update: as with previous iOS golden masters, reports are coming in that your device doesn't need to be twinned with a developer account to activate. So maybe anyone can install this build!

iOS 4.2 improves iPhone 3G performance

iOS 4.2 improves iPhone 3G performance

Testing has shown that the iPhone 3G's performance is much improved under iOS 4.2. Rene Ritchie at TiPb has posted a video (which you can watch after the break) of both iOS 3.0 and 4.2 (the gold master) running on an iPhone 3G. Here's what he found.

Entering text into Apple's Notes app was acceptably snappy. Browsing the Web was also noticeably improved, especially scrolling and load times (over Wi-Fi). Some pinch-and-zoom was a bit laggy, but definitely worlds better than iOS 4.0 on a 3G.
Apple was recently hit with a class action lawsuit from California iPhone 3G user Bianca Wofford, who claims that Apple "...knowingly and intentionally released what it called a system software 'upgrade' that, in fact, made hundreds of thousands of the Third Generation iPhones (sic) that were exclusively tethered to AT&T data plans 'useless' for their intended purpose."

To Bianca and everyone else in her frustrating situation, we say sit tight. 4.2 is due this month

iOS 4.2 bringing speed improvements to iPhone 3G?

iOS 4.2 bringing speed improvements to iPhone 3G ?

The recent iOS updates have mostly been welcome improvements for iPhone 4 and 3GS users, but it's been a decidedly different story for folks sticking to their venerable iPhone 3G. Not only have they been left out of some of the fun, but they were dealt a serious performance hit with iOS 4.0 that was only somewhat corrected by IOS 4.1. Could iOS 4.2 finally bring things back up to speed? According to the folks at TiPb, it just might -- they've now tested the iOS 4.2 gold master on an iPhone 3G and found that performance was noticeably improved across the board. Head on past the break to check out their results for yourself, and keep your fingers crossed that you'll actually see a similar improvement when the official update finally hits your 3G.

 Your comments :

* That's good to hear. 4.1 was a disaster when I still had my 3G

*When I had my 3g, here were some major problems after 4.1:
Took literally 15 seconds to open messaging.
Multitouch turned into Multitouch on a damn Blackberry Torch.
Booting up my device took at least 2 minutes.
As for battery life LOL I was lucky to get 5 hours.
Going from iPhone 3g to iPhone 4 was incredible
*Yes, these problems are significant, which is why I think Apple and others should start renting hardware. People are already paying monthly data fees, why not just throw in the hardware with it, like Cable? Renting hardware would allow everyone to have the latest tech and eliminate these types of problems.

* have a 3G, and Yes 4.0 and 4.1 has been horrible. So horrible, I refuse to buy another iPhone. Why would you go out and keep supporting them if they do this. I would of much preferred them telling me my phone cannot be upgraded to 4.0. But this was ridiculous... Never mind the time change bug that I got hit with...lol

* supported them with the apps I bought, and the searches I did on the phone. Yes I would have went to the iPhone4 if this performance issue did not leave such a bad taste in my mouth. Before I get a comment about it being 2 year old hardware. Yes you are right, but then do not let the 3G phones upgrade to 4.0 like the original iPhone could not. Also consider this, this will be what update 4 since June...and the bug with the daylight savings time with the alarms, it is just brutal.

Redsn0w jailbreak works with iOS 4.0.2 on your iPhone 3G

Redsn0w jailbreak works with iOS 4.0.2... on your iPhone 3G

This isn't going to do you iPhone 4 types much good yet, but it's interesting to note that the current version of redsn0w apparently works like a champ for jailbreaking your old iPhone 3G (yes -- 3G -- not 3GS) along with second-generation iPod touches running iOS 4.0.2. As we now know, 4.0.2 materialized for the sole purpose of patching up the PDF exploit that allowed JailbreakMe to do its thing, so it's kind of funny to see that redsn0w is still able to do its thing unhindered... just not on the devices most of us care about. Keep on keepin' on, Dev Team.
